Can't login using the plugin? ... might be cookie policy

Update 9/11/08: Symptoms of this issue are either not being able to login or not being able to see attached images.

A small number of users may be experiencing trouble logging into our service through the plugin. If you are not one of  these users, then there isn't much info in this post for you (and it's a tad Firefox tech heavy).

If you are experiencing this problem, I hope I can sort that out. Our plugin uses cookies to track "logged in" state. Some users (myself included) have manually modified the Firefox cookie policy. Here's how to check:

1. Open a new tab and type "about:config" in the location bar.
   • You may be prompted with a promise not to break anything (it is possible you've already disabled this little reminder), you may say yes as you do not need to modify anything yet.
2. In the filter text box, type "network.cookie.cookieBehavior".
   • The setting has a few possible values, the default being "0" (it will be bold if you have changed from the default).

This setting is described pretty thoroughly here. If your value is set to the default "0", then you have a different problem and should send mail to feedback@xoopit.com.

Assuming you've set this policy to some non-zero value, you have a few options:

• I recommend that you explicitly add .xoopit.com (note: leading period on purpose) to the "Exceptions List". I'm going to proceed to explain how to do this:
1. Open the Firefox preferences
2. Select the "Privacy" tab.
3. Now look for the "Accept cookies from sites (this should be checked).
4. To the right of this option is a button labeled "Exceptions", click that.
5. In the site name type .xoopit.com (leading period on purpose), and click "Allow", this will allow the plugin to track authentication state, for your browser, from now on.
6. you're done, the plugin should work.
• Alternately, you could set the cookie policy back to the default "0", which will reduce your overall cookie safety (not my personal choice). At this point you're done; the plugin should work.

There are a few settings that can cause the preferences panel to look slightly different than I described above, but you have to go pretty far out of your way to do that; at that point you probably already know how to accomplish what I am describing.
